AUGUST, 2015

Wow! The year is flying past and we just finished with both our July and August Rallies at Kandels RV Park in Walnut Creek and the Highway 127 Garage sale at the Huggy Bear campground in Middle Point, Ohio near Van Wert. Both rallies were well attended with 33 coaches at Walnut Creek and 22 at Huggy Bear.

Our membership continues to grow as we have added 5 new members since the July rally in Goshen, Indiana. Be sure to meet the following newbies who we hope can make it to one of our remaining rallies:
1. Roger and Jane Roush- Grove City, Ohio
2. Tom and Sue Wells- Radnor, Ohio
3. Bill and Sallie Hosack- Findlay, Ohio
4. Gail Joselyn- Hudson, Ohio
5. And our newest members – Jim and Pat Ward- Stow, Ohio
We also have 3-4 potential members considering membership this year.

We celebrated a special milestone this year with 50 years under or belts. We are often asked, “How do you do it?” “Our membership is declining and we’re just hanging on.”
I generally reply with:
• Our members care about each other. Number ONE.
• We personally recruit new members.
• We have one of the best chapter websites in FMCA. Thanks to our webmaster, Lynda Kiliany.
• We make every effort to get information out and communicate. Our Newsletter reaches everyone with internet service or not.
• We are on Facebook. Currently 23 members receive info and postings on our Facebook page and that number is growing.
• We work together to make our rallies a success and plan a year in advance.
At last look, we should have around 94 member families this year.

Our upcoming September 24-27 “Aviation” rally will be held at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton. Fred and Kay Dudding have planned a super rally including a visit to Carillon Park and a tour of Hawthorne Hill, the home of Orville Wright. You may visit the Air Force Museum, Dayton Art Institute and many other attractions during the rally. Get your reservations in soon as we only have 40 sites available for this exciting rally.

October’s rally takes us to Burton, Ohio and the Geauga County fairground for our final rally of the season. Dick and Pat Christiansen have planned another special rally with lots of surprises.
Mark October 8-11, 2015 on your calendars as we meet again to greet the fall season in beautiful Geauga County.

Also mark, December 5, 2015 for our Christmas Dinner to be held at the Dutch Valley Restaurant near Sugar Creek, Ohio. Our hosts will be Al and Sharon Jackson.

Continue to mark February Valentines dinners on the calendar in Florida and in Ohio for 2016.
Bob and Carol Ray will be hosting the FL dinner this year on Feb. 15, 2016 at the Elks in Sebring, FL and Clem and Sally Westbrook will be hosting the Ohio dinner on Feb. 15, 2016 at the Pine Tree Barn near Shreve, Ohio. Check the newsletter or the website for more info on the dates, times and locations.

A big THANK YOU to Bud and Wanda Trash for representing MWC at the national FMCA meeting in Madison, Wisconsin as our temporary, alternate National Director delegate. They continue to go above and beyond to represent us and cast votes for our chapter at these meetings. Wanda reported at our meeting at Huggy Bear and a synopsis of her report is attached to this newsletter.

We are still taking orders for 50th anniversary polo shirts and MWC ID plates. If you would like a shirt, please contact me soon as I will be placing an order. Contact Ray Taylor for one of the plates. The cost of the plates is $10.50 each and shirts are $25.00 incl. shipping.

Hope to see you at one of the two last rallies, Christmas or Valentines dinners. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy!

MWC May- June 2015 Pres. Message

President’s Message June, 2015
–by Ken Kerik, Pres.

It is with deep regret, that I report to you the passing of Paul Fish’s son Bill, while he was attending Glamarama. His son was involved in a canoeing accident and drowned in the Maumee River. He was 54. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. A special prayer for Paul and his family is appropriate after you read this newsletter. A special thanks to Ray Taylor, Jo Shisler, Dave and Pat Gottfried who accompanied Paul back home. You too are very special, and caring people.

We just returned from Goshen, Indiana where 24 MWC members attended Glamarama 2015. It was a most improved rally with several provided meals by Das Essenhaus and excellent entertainment with the Marlins and Sarah Ghetto performing on Friday and Saturday nights respectively.

We were honored by Glama and FMCA with the receipt of a 50th Anniversary Certificate. In part, FMCA’s President Charlie Adcock, wrote “On behalf of FMCA, I would like to congratulate the members of the Midwest Coachmen Chapter on your 50th anniversary. Please accept my sincere congratulations as you celebrate your fiftieth anniversary. We extend our best wishes for many more years of fun and camaraderie.”

Additionally, we were presented a check for $350.00 from Jane Roush and Glama. A banner celebrating MWC’s 50th was hung at our 50th celebration in Wauseon and also in Goshen at Glamarama. We will continue to display the banner at our future rallies and events.

At the ice cream social on Thursday noon, we served cake and ice cream to all the Glama chapter members attending. Again, Glama provided 8 sheet cakes for the celebration.

We enjoyed the left-over cake at our potluck held on Thursday evening in our reserved shelter. We had a short business meeting after the potluck. Wanda Trash was elected as a temporary delegate to represent MWC at the Madison, Wisc. National rally at the end of July. Doug Erman reported that approximately $600.00 would be coming back to MWC from the 50th anniversary rally and unreimbursed refunds to our members who paid, but were unable to attend, were approved from those funds.

While at Glamarama, Marilyn and I visited the RV/MH Hall of Fame near Elkhart, to take pictures of the Tim Fowler Memorial Brick and the MWC 50th Celebration brick. Only the Fowler brick was finished and installed in the FMCA walkway. The MWC brick is completed but not installed yet. We took a picture of the Fowler brick to send to Mary. I will ask Lynda to post it on the website also.

I hope you all have received the 50th Anniversary Edition of the membership directory. They were passed out by Alan Jackson at the 50th rally and others will be mailed out. In this issue is a summary of the early history of MWC going back to the initial meeting on October, 19, 1963 near Liberty, Indiana. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t seen it on the website.

Our Chapter Fair at Glamarama was a success. We recruited Roger and Jane Roush, Grove City, Ohio and Bill and Sallie Hosack, from Findlay, Ohio as new members. Also, we added Gail Joselyn, friend of Bruce Horsfall as a new member. There are also 3 others who are hot prospects from our gathering in Goshen.

While at the Chapter Fair, I was able to talk with many Chapter officers. We are exploring holding joint rallies with the Ohio Nomads, Northern Lights (Mich.), Tri-State Traveliers and the Michigan Knights. We will be exploring some of these options for our 2016 rally schedule. (How about a Bay City, Mich. Rally to view the Tall Ships?)

Our July 16-19 rally is hosted by Jerry and Phyllis Griesen at Kandel RV park in Walnut Creek, Ohio. Registration forms have gone out with the details. Please return forms by the June 20 deadline. The August 6-9 rally is hosted by Doug and Donna Erman at the Huggy Bear campground in Middle Point, Ohio. Watch for a registration form and details soon.

50th Anniversary shirts are still available! You can order them directly from the MVP Sports Store by calling 517-764-5165. They are running big, so you will need a size smaller than normal. Just indicate MWC chapter and size. They will bill your credit card.

Marilyn has put together an album of pictures from the 50th anniversary rally. We will bring them to future rallies so all can view.

In closing, so much is happening that involves our chapter that I am forgetting a lot. As it come to me, I will get it on the website or in our next newsletter.

See you all in Amish country in July. We are leaving this week with family for the Smokies to celebrate our “50”!

President’s Message

MWC May- June 2015 Pres. Message

April RallyWow, our first rally of the 2015 season is now history, with a big thank you to Bud and Wanda Trash and Dave and Pat Gottfried serving as our hosts. The Crawford County Fairgrounds was an ideal site for a “not so spring-like” opening rally.  While we had a great time viewing and walking the Lowe-Volk Nature Center near Leesville, we had a really enjoyable time at the Crazy Fox Speakeasy, meeting Al Capone and his personal body guards. We were entertained by singing flappers and other “Roaring Twenties” persons. Our own “Ma Barker (Wanda) was greeted by Big “Scarface” Al.  The first rally of the year was a hoot and enjoyable as long as your propane tank was near full. (As one of our members found out with a 2AM departure. You must check the gauge periodically! – Roger and Martha.)  We welcomed Gail Josalyn as a guest of Bruce Horsfall and Gail is interested in membership in MWC. She was provided the necessary applications before she departed on Sunday.

50th Anniversary Celebration Update

I hope you all have had an opportunity to view the article in the April issue of the FMCA magazine on our 50th anniversary celebration and also read the history of MWC from our club’s birth on October 19-20, 1963 at Whitewater State Park near Liberty, Indiana on our website.
A CD with pictures of that rally and subsequent FMCA and MWC rallies will be shown on big screen at the anniversary celebration in May at the Fulton County Fairgrounds.  You still have time to register for the celebration and forms and info can be found on our website at midwestcoachmen.com. Over 60 coaches from MWC, Michigan Knights and FMCA will be there. Charlie Owens, our first President and his wife, Jean, will be present to share those early memories with us. The Northeastern chapter will also be represented by a member couple stopping by on a vacation trip. FMCA’s President Charlie Adcock and Gloria will also be our guests as well as other FMCA officers.  If you ordered commemorative shirts, they will be available upon registration check in.  Display coaches, courtesy of Shafer’s RV,  Delta, Ohio, will be available for viewing and purchase.  If you volunteered to bake cookies for the celebration, please make three dozen and bring with you. We will inform you where and when to drop them off at the fairgrounds.

Registration for this area rally can be accessed through the FMCA.com website. Just click on Area Rallies and look for the GLAMA rally and click on the registration form or register online.
The rally is scheduled for June 3-7, 2015 at the Elkhart County 4H Fairground in Goshen, Indiana.  If you are planning to attend, please let me know as quickly as possible, so that I can provide an attendance number to the parking crew in order for all MWC members to be located in the same area. If you request handicapped parking or 50 amp/full hookup, you will not be parked with the group. 30 amp service and water will be made available for our chapter. Don’t forget to volunteer to help. The hours spent by our members count toward a division of excess funds made by Glama after the rally. Volunteers are needed to drive golf carts, registration, crafts, parking, security and others. Volunteers not only receive the vendor coupons available to all registrants, but receive an extra $10 worth of coupons. Also, volunteers will receive an invite to a catered dinner on Saturday night.  Please contact Jane Roush at janeroush50@gmail.com for questions and volunteering. Those of you planning to arrive early and not volunteering, a $25.00, cash only fee, will be collected and you will be directed to a holding area.

New National Director Needed

Penny Rowley, elected last year to the position, has resigned. I have asked the Nominations Committee, consisting of Cheryl Bowen, Dave Gottfried and Pat Bisson to determine candidates for the position and present a nomination at one of our next meetings for election. If no election is held prior to the July, Madison, Wisconsin National meeting, we will need to elect a temporary delegate to represent MWC.

MWC Directory

Al Jackson has assured the delivery of the 50th Anniversary Special Edition of the Membership Directory at the May, 50th anniversary celebration. Copies will be distributed to those attending. Copies for non-attendees will be mailed.
Hope to see you at our biggest celebration to date!
Pres. Ken

President’s Message

As I pull some thoughts together for this message, we are babysitting my granddaughter who has a 105 degree temp. and sounds like she has the “croup”. We are headed to the Doctor’s office this afternoon for some prescription meds.

Needless to say, flu season is in bloom, although the temperatures have moderated for the past three days, and we should reach 52 today. I hope that those of you who have wisely headed south or west to a warmer climate have arrived safely and are enjoying the warmer weather.

The December 6th Christmas Dinner was attended by 46 of our members at Der Dutchmen Restaurant in Belleville. Our hosts, Alan and Sharon Jackson arranged for a delicious Amish buffet and we were able to update attendees on MWC happenings and recognize winter birthaversaries.

The 2015 Rally Schedule was announced by Steve Juliano, Rally coordinator. You may find it already on our MWC website just by clicking in midwestcoachmen.com and also in this newsletter. We start our rally season in April at the Crawford County fairgrounds, hosted by the Trash’s.

A few weeks later we’ll be celebrating our 50th anniversary with the Michigan Knights at the Fulton County fairgrounds. As I have learned historic information on our chapter, I have been posting items of interest on our website and on Facebook. I hope that you have an opportunity to learn some of this history with me, because it is important that we learn what and who we are celebrating during those past 50 years.
A reminder to get your registrations in early for the celebration as we need a numbers count as soon as we can to complete our planning. Many FMCA officials will be attending and Charlie Adcock, President, has sent his and Gloria’s registration. Our first MWC President, Charlie Owens and his wife, Jean will also be attending.

We have ordered a MWC 50th Anniversary brick at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana. It will be located in the FMCA section. For those attending the Glamara 2015 rally in June, GLAMA will be paying for admission to the HOF, if you wear your rally badge. You will be able to view the Tim Fowler Memorial brick and our 50th celebration brick, if you attend.

Those of you planning to attend the FL Valentine Dinner, it is on 2/13 at 2PM at Homers Restaurant in Sebring. Please call the Bissons by 2/7/15 if you will be attending.

Presidents Message

Midwest Coachmen
Winter, 2014

Wow!! It was 22 degrees Saturday night and I hadn’t thought about winterizing the RV yet, since someone in the family still wanted to make a year-end camping trip to Harrison Lake State Park. Needless to say, the next day Ty Kolbe and I decided that it was time to drain the water systems and add antifreeze to the lines of our coaches and get them ready for storage, to the dismay of our spouses.

If you attended the October rally at Geneva on the Lake, you had an enjoyable weekend thanks to our hosts, Ty and Terrye Kolbe, and co-hosts, Dick and Pat Christianson. The Covered Bridges and Wineries tours and festival were a magnificent ending to a year full of rallies, camping and friends.

A MWC, Wii bowling tournament was held with Sandy Baxter winning the championship and trophy. Our first outdoor/indoor movie night had us watching “The Monuments Men” with snacks and refreshments. A catered breakfast and an Italian dinner highlighted a great fall weekend.

The last two rallies of the year brought eight new members to our group and we were happy to welcome them to MWC. Joining us in September at the Tiffin rally were Don and Deb Sekorky from Seville, OH. They also joined us at the October rally where we welcomed Ed and Donna Malee, from North Ridgeville, Don and Sandy Moyer, from Eastlake, Ohio and Joe “Diesel” and Gail Swartz, from Avon Lake, Ohio. (Don’t forget to ask me how Joe got that middle name).

Planning continues for our 50th anniversary celebration with the Michigan Knights next May, 2015. Registrations are coming in slowly as are orders for the anniversary polo shirts. So far, about 20 shirts have been ordered. Four FMCA officer registrations have been received and several more are expected to attend, including Charlie Adcock, President and Jane Roush, GLAMA, President. If you haven’t sent in your registration, please think about it and consider sending it in early, as it helps in our planning efforts that will go on through this winter. If you are unable to send it in now, please advise of your intent to attend. We need to have a count for planning purposes.

I have been conversing with Charlie Owens, MWC’s first President back in 1965, and he and his wife Jean are planning to attend the celebration. I am attempting to get the early years information from him to be able to put a power point presentation together for the 50th rally. (A winter Project).

Steve Juliano, rally coordinator, informs me that the rallies for 2015 are in the works and a listing should be available at the December 6, Christmas Dinner at Der Dutchman restaurant.

You should be seeing a flyer from Allan and Sharon Jackson, hosts for this dinner, with registrations and detailed information in this newsletter or a separate communication. We hope that you will be able to join with us and meet some of our newest members.

Please keep well and safe, and for those snowbirds headed South or West, remember us who brave the winters for some dumb reason or another.

Pres. Ken
